There is a little cottage in Ubin, and in that cottage lies a fireplace. So I question, why would anyone need or even want a fireplace? This is Singapore! Then my teacher replied, maybe they missed home.
The cottage belonged to an English man. It was his holiday house. Wow, I thought. Lucky bastard had such a beautiful holiday house on such a beautiful island overlooking such a beautiful view of the ocean.
But still, maybe they missed home.
Did they ever light the fireplace on Christmas Day despite it already feeling like one outside, trying to remember the much-welcomed warmth they felt back home, next to their fire and surrounded by their family? Did the fallen leaves ever remind them of the pure-white snow drifting down outside their window while they basked in the comfort of the fireplace?
I wouldn’t know. This mega-sized fireplace called Singapore is my home. I have no need for fireplaces and additional heating beyond the sun here. But things don’t always have to be pragmatic, I realize, because, sometimes, maybe people just miss home.
