Day 1 The Five Stages of Grief [Skyler]

ravens stand guard
crosses protect
firmly refusing
that which they lack

trucks rush by
loudly honking
lashing at the quiet
which they had been in

long winding roads
beg for more time
as candle wax melts
stains left behind

water seeps out
the earth starts to cry
they only consider
they can't change how they die

flowers have wilted
grass thick as fur
mere acceptance remains
only graves remember

As seen from the title, I have decided to write a poem about the five stages of grief- denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. This is because there were many striking images which I remembered from yesterday, and I just thought about how they could symbolize people mourning the dead, and how they were all in different stages of dealing with it. From the poem, each stanza represents one stage.

Denial is seen from how the birds and crosses refuse to leave the deceased’s side. Anger is seen by the vehicles disrupting the peace. Bargaining is represented by them asking for more time. Depression is seen from the puddles of water on the ground, as if the earth was crying. And acceptance is represented by how deserted everything is, showing that people have moved on.
